I am normally an extremely private person so writing this is a big deal for me. Over the last year and a half many people have questioned me about my dramatic loss of weight. Being a private person I choose most of the time not tell my story. I only tell my story now for the benefit of someone who is tired of the war, the battle, and is ready to do something about their weight. If you read my story and it helps you in any way to make a change, then this letter was worth the time to write.

As a child I don't think you could have categorized me as a fat kid, though at times I was heavy. I was a larger guy, good athlete and even had the chance to compete at the collegiate level in baseball on a scholarship.

It's during graduate school that my problems began. I ate as though I was still practicing baseball and working out 4-6 hours a day. All I did was study and go to class for 4 years. The stress was incredible and my only solace was the food I ate. Bigger meals crept in and late night binges were the norm. When I finally graduated I weighed in at 325. Worst thing though was that id developed bad eating habits, actually id always had bad eating habits but now they had become finely tuned. I'd come to realize that my mother, grandfather, and uncle had all had by-pass surgery in the 70's. They just didn't ever seem healthy to me and still struggled with weight issues their entire life.

The final straw was when in 2001 my friends came up to me and said if Id lose 90 pounds in 1 year they would give me $2500.00 dollars. The game was on I'd have to get down to 235 in 1 year. I knew I could do it. One year later I stepped on the scale at 250 pounds. My friends were so impressed that they didn't make me pay the bet I'd lost. I didn't receive the money from the bet either since I hadn't got down to 235 pounds.

A bad day in my life was when one year after my 250 pound way in, I now weighed in at 325 pounds. Something was wrong. What was wrong with me? I was so tired of the roller coaster, the constant battles, and the constant prejudice in regards to my weight. I always hated the little sarcastic jabs about my weight as well.

I'd heard about lap band surgery from one of my patients. I looked into it and felt it was my best option. By- pass surgery was not an option and Id seen the side affects too often in my office.

After Surgery

I've never once regretted having the procedure done. I now play competitive baseball (not softball). I participate in full contact wrestling, I get to wear incredible clothes. I even tease people and tell them I'm going to retire as a Chiropractor and be an underwear model. The procedure has changed my life. Food is no longer a God to me.
